Meet the Reps!
ACCOUNTING- Iqra Aziz Malik (Year 2)
I’m Iqra, an Accounting and Finance student.
I really enjoy the accounting side of my course, but my favourite module is Tax. Why? Because tax isn’t just theory—it’s everywhere! From your paycheck to shopping or booking a holiday, taxes shape so much of our daily lives. Learning about it feels like understanding how the world works.
My best exam tip is that active recall and practice are key. Don’t just re-read notes—quiz yourself and tackle practice questions!
If I could change one thing, I’d research the modules more before applying. But no regrets—I’m loving the journey!
BIOSCIENCES- Lucy Gaskin (Year 2)
Hi, I’m Lucy I’m a biosciences student. My favourite module this year is microbiology as it incorporates both genetics and cells which are areas that I find very interesting. Also, the way these lectures are delivered is very engaging despite having a late finish of 6pm! Something which I have found useful when preparing for exams is to have a clear plan of what I’m going to revise and when as this helps me reduce stress when I can see all my tasks laid out. One thing I wish I knew sooner about biosciences is that you can ask questions during labs even if it seems daunting.
ECONOMICS
ENGINEERING- Arthur Chai (YEAR 4)
I'm Arthur, a Civil Engineering student, and my favourite module would be Geotechnics (my dissertation is in that field, after all!). Having been here for over 3 years, I would say that staying organised and proactive makes all the difference as with most subjects, and I would also recommend familiarising yourself with the syllabus, as the amount and depth of content can feel overwhelming closer to the exam season. I look forward to meeting and helping you all!
GOVERNMENT AND INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS
MANAGEMENT & MARKETING- Charlea Bailey Pratt
MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES- Sam Kay (YEAR 4)
Heyo! I’m Sam, a maths undergrad and an avid maths communicator™️. I’m on an integrated masters program, which btw is the best way to get your masters… feel free to ask me about it! My favourite module is Geometry of Mathematical Physics III since it sparked my interest in particle physics, which is what my research project is on.
Top tips:
For exams, complete every single problem sheet as revision. They are model exam questions and they are often reworded/replicated in the exam!
For maths in general, get to know your lecturers and get them to know YOU! Say thank you after a lecture, ask them questions, turn up to their offices for chats. It goes a long way and bridges the gap between student and teachers, which is so important at uni!
You can ask me anything about maths, the Standard Model, podcasting, and jazz music🕺
SPORT AND EXERCISE SCIENCE
ANTHROPOLOGY- Hazel Salter (YEAR 3)
I’m Hazel and I study Natural Sciences BSc.
Particularly I have focused on Statistical Mathematics and Decision Based Mathematics including: Decision Theory, Cryptography & Codes and Operations Research. (all third year subjects I am currently taking)
My favourite modules are:
Evolutionary Medicine of Maternal and Infant Health, as I loved learning about a wide variety of stages covering mother and infants health. The subject was very interesting and the lecturer is extremely engaging.
Cryptography and Codes as it is very fun to find out the logic behind encrypted messages and ciphers, and learning to make your own!
My best exam tips are, for mathematics: make sure you know your formula- especially for stats! for anthropology: I’ve never had anthropology exams, but for coursework, I recommend keeping track of your references in a system like Zotero or EndNote. Makes bibliographies so much easier! Some things I wish I knew earlier about my subject is, for maths, group revision is so helpful, especially for working through problem sheets. For anthropology: how much relevance there is in reading the news, or just any piece of media you can surrounding your topic- you never know what might be useful.
EARTH SCIENCES- Koji Stephenson (YEAR 3)
'Hello! I’m a BSc Environmental Geoscience student interested in geochemistry with expertise in palaeobiology, climate and modelling including Matlab and ArcGIS. My favourite module is environmental fieldwork as the projects are diverse with real-world applications, making them a perfect addition to your CV to demonstrate import industry skills.
My best tip for university is to experiment with your schedule and study methods to determine what works since everybody studies differently. Additionally, a tip that I wish I knew earlier is that networking isn’t limited to company representatives and your peers. Your lecturers – who are experts in their field, essentially the mark schemes to your exams, and potential referees for future opportunities – are just as important.'
GEOGRAPHY
LAW- Gregory Wong (YEAR 2)
MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES- James Strachan (YEAR 2)
Hi, I’m James Strachan. So far, my favourite modules have been Markov Chains and Calculus 1. One piece of advice I’d offer to fellow math students is that genuinely understanding the material (especially the proofs) is far more important than just memorising it. Additionally, I recommend making full use of all available resources, such as office hours, tutorials, and drop-in sessions.
PHILOSOPHY- Kathryn McCafferty (YEAR 3)
SOCIOLOGY- Millie Frosdick (Year 3)
Hi im millie and im a third year Anthropology and sociology student.
THEOLOGY AND RELIGION - Charlotte Clarkson (Year 2)
Hi, I’m Charlotte! I’m a Religion, Society and Culture student within the Theology and Religion Department. With this programme you are able to cross departments to Anthropology and Sociology, it will benefit you. My favourite module is either Death, Ritual and Belief (THEO2231) or Religion, Violence and Peacebuilding (THEO3941) as they are both such interesting modules plus the lecturers as clearly passionate about the subject, so they make it even better. As most, Theology exams are online and 24 hours long so my best tips for you is for you to organise your notes and make sure that there are no gaps, plus you need know what your strong topics are, and your weak topics are. If you’re also looking at deepening your theological knowledge I would also follow the Theology Society insta as they host talks most week! Please get in touch with me, if you have any questions regarding anything!
ARCHEOLOGY- Theo Harper (YEAR 3)
My name is Theo, I do Anthropology and Archaeology. My favourite module so far was the Isotopes Analysis Advanced Skills class, I loved the lab work and writing up the report. My best exam tip, especially for archaeology exams, is to know some case studies (sites/assemblages) to whip out to support your argument! One thing I wish I knew earlier is that there are so many cool niches in archaeology to learn about, particularly as I moved into second and third year – topics of archaeology vary so much and are all so interesting.
CHEMISTRY- Zoe Gibbs (YEAR 3)
CLASSSICS AND ANCIENT HISTORY
COMPUTER SCIENCE
EDUCATION
ENGISH STUDIES- Niamh Davenport
FINANCE
HISTORY- Marcia Costa (YEAR 2)
Hi! I’m Marcia and I study history.
Out of all my modules my favourite one has definitely been my conversations with history strand “Fascism then, Fascism now”, this is an area that has always interested me and the professor that teaches it is also one of my favourite professors!
Best exam tip is to take regular breaks, just because the exam is 24 hours doesn’t mean you have to use all of them, and I found it easier to concentrate with breaks. One thing that I wished I’d known about my course earlier is what modules were best avoided.
MUsic
PHYSICS- Ellie Fisher (YEAR 4)
I’m Ellie and I’m doing an integrated Physics masters. My favourite thing about my degree is its real-world applications, and my favourite module has definitely been my fourth-year project as I’ve had so much exposure to real research which has a tangible impact! I also really enjoyed Condensed Matter 3 as it covered some very complex topics in a really interesting way.
My best exam tip is to stay consistent throughout the year and not leave revision to the last minute over the Easter holidays. I’d recommend a termly recap of the term’s lectures in which you condense the lecture notes to pick out key topics and equations for the exams!
THEOLOGY AND RELIGION - Flynn Edwards (year 4)
Hi I’m Flynn.
My favourite module is anything with Douglas Davies, such an interesting perspective and such a lovable guy.
My best exam tip is to break up your work, work for 2 hours max then take a walk, have a nap or have lunch for 30 mins to an hour then repeat. You will be done before the evening and will do alright.
One thing I wish I knew earlier is that you do need to include a bibliography for all your work, found out the hard way.
