MCR Membership
What is a MCR Membership?
The membership is optional though we encourage all postgraduate students to become a full member of our MCR community. All MCR members are also JCR members and, thus will receive a heavily discounted rate for both JCR and MCR events and activities, gym membership, sports and society ‘subs’, tickets to the Winter and Summer Balls and the annual College day. Events are usually discounted by 50% for JCR/MCR members which offers huge savings across your time at Stephenson. Membership also includes a College tie/scarf which students are expected to wear for Matriculation.
To join the MCR, click the following link, where you will be directed to a sign-up page for a MCR membership and Gym Membership (optional).
Benefits as a MCR member
Running for Office: Running for elections is only possible for JCR/MCR members. In addition, deciding who runs your JCR/MCR in the future is a process in which JCR/MCR members can vote, however, non-JCR/MCR members are not eligible to vote in these elections.
Sports and Societies: Any sport or society that has joining fees or ‘subs’ will be charged at double the rate for a non-MCR member.
Committees: To attend committees, and therefore benefit from them on a personal development level, you must be a MCR member. This also means that you will not be able to hold a position in any committee.
College Tie / College Pashmina: A college tie or college pashmina is included within the MCR Levy, otherwise you will be invoiced a cost of £12.50 for the tie or £17 for the scarf.
College Events: As a non-member of the MCR you are still entitled to attend events that we host, however, due to not having paid the MCR levy these events have a price difference, some of which are outlined below:
Winter and Summer Balls: The prices for the Winter and Summer Balls are heavily discounted for MCR members each year and priority for tickets at these events is reserved for MCR members.
ReFreshers: Priority is given to those who are MCR members for most events in ReFreshers’ Week. Additionally, the price for non-MCR members for such events is normally double that of a MCR member.
Fee for 24/25 Incoming Students
The membership is charged as single payment of £65 for a one-year programme (taught postgraduates and £170 for a three-year programme (PhD).
Gym: Stephenson Gym membership for the whole academic year is charged at £100 for non JCR/MCR members while it is down to £40 for JCR/MCR members.
